National Consumer Campaign - Kempen Konsumer Kebangsaan (3K)

Consumers need to look back on their lifestyle and prepare to initiate major changes to their lifestyle by following the situation that occurs at this time.

Many obstacles that occur in the world give a negative impact on consumers in Malaysia. Previously, global issues are shaped rotation, but now consumers are more shaped structural issues, which will always exist. Therefore, users need to change lifestyle to enable them to adapt to new challenges. Here are some of the new global challenges:

•  The increase in the price of oil and gas - this increase affects all sectors of the economy, including food production and transport.

• Increase in intake of whole grains - this problem happen in crowded country especially in China and India. The increased intake of whole grains due to the many people who are capable of growing,.

• Food to biofuel - checkers among developing countries is also increasing in developing countries, many food items have been used to produce biofuel. Therefore causes a decrease in food production. Food to produce fuel fire needs a higher price than food for human consumption.

• Climate change - many lands that were previously issued food abound, now no longer producing revenue as a result of climate change.

• McDonaldisasi community - a growing number of young people who adopt a western dietary pattern and these values ​​result in a more materialistic society, resulting in a lot of wastage and psycho-social problems.

The price of rice has increased by 141%, when wheat is also 120% over the last few years. There are 37 pieces of state who are facing problems of food shortages. In addition, more than 100 million people around the world will be in poverty if food prices continue to rise. United Nations has said that the food production has to increase by 50% to solve the problem of food shortages.

For users in Malaysia as well, increasing the impression this meant: 

• Increased boarding life      

• Qualities of life increasingly berkurangan

• Debt has increased

• Bankrupt

• The problems of mental healthiness

SWITCH! Campaign

FOMCA created a campaign which is called as SWITCH!

When I saw the word "SWITCH", I was thinking of the switch that we use to turn on or off the electric appliances. Does this campaign use to ask us the switch off the electric appliances when we do not use it to save the electricity? So, let's see the information I have.

"Energy is one of the basic needs for the development of a country. The main issue is the ability of a country to fulfill the needs of the people and the rising cost of energy at the same time. Domestic consumers, commercial and industry have to realize the importance of energy efficiency to play a role and responsibility in conjunction with the government.

By realising this, Water and Energy Consumer Association of Malaysia (WECAM) or formerly known as Fomca has developed a National Energy Efficiency Plan for the next 10 years. This campaign is the first step in the implementation of this plan. The campaign has also received support from the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (formerly the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications), Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Malaysia Energy Centre (PTM).

SWITCH! is an effort by NGOs with government and industry support for the good of the people and the country.

Well, I guess 50% above of my assumption is correct.

There is "EARTH HOUR" few days ago, did you join? I joined it. I closed all the lights in my house for 1 hour. Just a simple step, right? So, why don't you do it?

FOMCA is celebrating 40th anniversary this year!

Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (FOMCA) is founded on 10th June 1973. Therefore, it is celebrating 40th anniversary in this year (2013). This is a good news to share with all of you and thank all of you for supporting FOMCA. Without your support, FOMCA may not be able to found and maintain its good image until now.

During these years, FOMCA always try to give the BEST service for all of us since we are consumers and we have the right to choose something, get the information of the products and so on. It prevent us to be exploited by the exploiter so that we can live our life without any worries.

FOMCA is one of the useful organisations that can help us in life. Without FOMCA, we may face many problems when buying something and so on. So, let's say THANK YOU again to FOMCA!

About FOMCA

FOMCA (Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations) is a non-government organisation that is voluntary, non-profit, non-political and civic-oriented. It is the umbrella body of registered consumer associations in Malaysia. FOMCA is founded on 10th June 1973, links the activities of consumer associations in Malaysia as well as at the international level and works towards strengthening consumer protection through lobbying, networking, representation, campaigning and education. 

FOMCA’s work is focused on empowering consumers in the context of a developing country with a growing consumerist society. In this regard, it goes beyond the traditional role of consumer protection in the marketplace, which has been called the “value for money” approach. Instead, FOMCA advocates a “value for people”, “value for environment” and “value for money” paradigm.

The formation of numerous consumer associations by the early 1970s such as the Selangor Consumer Associations, Consumers Association of Penang, Consumers Association of Sarawak, Consumers Association of Negeri Sembilan, Consumers Association of Kedah, Perak Consumer Association and Consumer Association of Malacca resulted in the government calling for the establishment of a federation for consumer associations to coordinate their advocacy activities. The main objectives and roles of FOMCA are to;

- Serve as the coordinating, consultative and advisory agency of its registered member consumer associations in Malaysia.

- Address and advocate the consumer interest in order to promote consumer welfare.

-Resolve consumer issues through policy development and advocacy.

- Provide representation for member associations to deal with the government. 

- Disseminate consumer information and undertake consumer education.

FOMCA also represents the consumer interest in policy making and policy implementation in various ministries and agencies such as the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, etc.
